Architecture in Salento

Pietra Leccese, a sandstone of warm golden hue, is the main material of our architecture and marks out the typical color of the ancient centers and main monuments, making the baroque decoration an unique example of this art. Among the architectural beauties there are the nineteenth-century villas, the houses at court as well as castles and coastal towers, fortified farmhouses dating back to the medieval period. Dry walls, Menhirs, Dolmen, sighting promontories (the so-called Specchie) and underground oil-mills are the most ancient evidence left by the Messapian people.

The fort is open to the public for about a month after years of closure and neglect, stretching its visiting hours.
